Oman gratuity rules at a glance
- For service from 31 July 2023: one month's basic wage for each year of service.
- For service before 31 July 2023 (old law): 15 days' basic wage per year for the first three years, then one month per year.
- Only the last basic wage is used.
- This applies to expats until the new savings system for non-Omanis starts. Reports say it becomes mandatory in July 2027 (Royal Decree 60/2025); after that, employers pay a monthly contribution instead of lump-sum gratuity for new service.
Gratuity formula
Gratuity = old-rule amount for service before 31 July 2023 + (basic wage × years of service from 31 July 2023).
Worked example
Imran's basic wage is OMR 300. He joined on 1 August 2021 and leaves on 1 August 2026. About 2 years fall under the old rule (2 × 150 = OMR 300) and 3 years under the new rule (3 × 300 = OMR 900). Total ≈ OMR 1,200.

The expat savings system
Oman's Social Protection Law introduces a savings (provident) fund for non-Omani workers: employers will contribute 9% of basic wage each month, and the worker receives the balance with returns when leaving Oman. Until it starts, the gratuity rules above apply. Check the Social Protection Fund and Ministry of Labour for the latest start date.
Tips before you leave your job
- Ask HR for a written final settlement that shows gratuity, unused leave, notice pay and any deductions.
- Check that the salary used is the right one: last basic wage.
- Keep copies of your contract, salary slips and bank statements.
- If you disagree with the amount, contact the Ministry of Labour, Oman before you leave the country.
